All you need to know ahead of Widnes' pre-season curtain-raiser

Widnes' pre-season will ramp up a notch this evening when they host Southport for the first of eight friendlies.

Kicking off at 7.45pm at the Halton Stadium, Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey's men will get their first minutes in the tank since the 3-1 home win over Kendal Town in late April.

After returning to training 10 days ago, the Whites have endured a fitness-fuelled schedule which has included three sessions a week.

But with more hard work lying in wait ahead of their season opener against Ramsbottom United on 17 August, the Widnes co-bosses will be looking to gauge where their current squad are at over the coming days which sees them face Rylands on Tuesday (16 July) before jetting to the Isle of Man on Saturday.

Widnes' quintet of new signings - Lewis Buckley, Sam Heathcote, Danny Shaw, James Steele and Jake Phillips - are all set to feature for the first time in white tonight as Towey and Akrigg look to field two different sides in either half.

A couple trialists may also feature, but new addition Josh Klein-Davies (holiday) is unavailable while Michael Grogan faces a late fitness test due to a slight muscular problem.

Opponents Southport will step up their pre-season preparations ahead of kick-off in the National League North on Saturday 3 August.

Finishing 13th in the table last season, Liam Watson's Sandgrounders will be looking to build on momentum gained from winning both the Lancashire and Liverpool Senior Cups in county cup action.

Tonight marks a second pre-season runout for Watson's men, who were beaten 2-1 by a Wigan Athletic XI on Tuesday.

Kieran Glynn is the only confirmed new signing thus far for Port, arriving on a season long-loan from Salford City, with a number of trialists blooded by Watson in Tuesday's game at Wigan.
