Whites’ winless run goes on

Widnes remain five games without a win after slipping to a 1-0 defeat at home to Tadcaster Albion.

Jake Day's goal after 33 minutes was enough to separate the sides, with the Taddy striker capitalising on a Joe Herbert error to apply a tidy finish.

The Whites showed plenty of endeavour, but the closest they came to an equaliser was Sam Sheen's rasping effort that was tipped over by Michael Ingham.

Widnes, still struggling with the effects of a sickness-hit squad, made four changes to the side that drew at Mossley last time out.

While Kev Towey and Steve Akrigg were boosted by the returns of Shaun Holden, Danny Shaw and Fisnik Hajdari, James Steele and Keenan Quansah both succumbed to illness, with the latter initially named as a substitute before pulling out of the squad prior to the warm-up.

Elsewhere, Michael Grogan, scorer of Widnes’ equaliser in midweek, came in for Danny Ventre who dropped to the bench alongside Lewis Buckley.

The game started evenly, with both sides sharing half-chances inside the early exchanges. Jay Roberts drove forward to rifle an effort over for Widnes, while Alfie Beestin struck a volley off target after Hajdari blocked Day’s initial effort.

Tadcaster fashioned the game’s first-real opening after 16 minutes through to Donald Chimalilo, but Owen Wheeler was alert to push his effort away to safety.

The opening 30 minutes resembled a pre-season fixture, but Widnes were once again left to rue defensive mistakes as Tadcaster took the lead.

Yet another goal came by virtue of Widnes’ own doing. Harry Brazel played a pass back to Herbert who slipped, allowing Jack Walters to pick up possession for Tadcaster and cross for Day, who provided the simplest of finishes to give the visitors a slender advantage.

Widnes looked to respond, but Sheen’s driving effort on the stroke of half-time was tipped over by the relatively quiet Ingham in goal for Taddy.

The Whites needed a spark and they started the second half positively. Ben Hodkinson hit a dipping volley off target before the forward was guilty of letting a gilt-edged chance go begging moments later, firing over from Brazel’s cut-back inside the six-yard area.

In truth, Widnes perhaps edged the second half and looked the more likely side to score the game’s crucial second goal, but the quality from both teams was lacking in an uneventful 45 minutes of football.

Buckley and Josh Klein-Davies were both introduced from the bench as Widnes went in search of an equaliser, but both players looked short of confidence and lacked the desired impact – indicative of the Whites’ recent poor run of form.

The Brewers were unfortunate not to add gloss to their victory when Alex Wiles’ free-kick eight minutes from time crashed back against the post as Curtis Woodhouse’s men held on for a vital three points.

A fourth defeat in five for Widnes – with a goal in all four losses – now languish towards the bottom of the table despite a promising start to the season, with plenty for co-bosses Akrigg and Towey to ponder moving forward.
