Widnes quintet earn NPL Team of the Season Honours

Widnes quintet earn NPL Team of the Season Honours

Callum Chadwick9 Jun - 19:29

Five Whites named in league-best team

Widnes quintet Mark Halstead, Matty Rain, Niall Battersby, Sean Miller and Steven Irwin have been named in the Northern Premier League West Team of the Season.

Their inclusions are a testament to the pivotal roles they've played in our promotion to the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Halstead, Rain, Battersby and Miller have all been named in the team, while Irwin has been named amongst the substitutes.

Goalkeeper Halstead played every minute of every league game, keeping a division-best 17 clean sheets, whilst also delivering at crucial moments, including a memorable save at 0-0 away at Hednesford Town in February.

Rain has developed into one of the best left-backs in the division. A virtual ever-present since signing in the autumn of 2022, Rain chipped in with four goals and surpassed 100 appearances for the club.

Central defender Battersby was equally influential at the heart of the Widnes defence alongside Louis Isherwood. The pair excelled together and provided the stability, along with Halstead, at the base of the spine of the team to propel the team towards promotion.

What hasn't been said about Sean Miller? The Widnes talisman has put forward a compelling case to scoop the division's Player of the Season award. Unplayable on his day, Miller scored 14 goals this season and surpassed 100 appearances for the club.

Captain Irwin has driven the team forward from the base of the midfield. A mainstay under Michael Ellison, the 34-year-old's attention will now turn to his new role as manager as the preparations for the 2025-26 season get underway.

Congratulations to all of the lads recognised!
