Widnes FC 2-0 Oldham Boro

Widnes Football Club10 Aug 2014 - 18:37

Widnes FC bounced back from an opening day defeat to Wigan Robin Park last weekend with an impressive display against Oldham Boro.

Goals from Graham Molloy and James Corner sealed the home side’s first three points of the new season. Despite the positives keeper Robert Cork received a straight red card for bringing down Lee Knowles on the edge of the box.
Both teams enjoyed early pressure before Widnes captain Gary Williams headed straight at the keeper. Soon after Oldham had a penalty claim turned down when Lee Scanlon thought he was fouled as he tried to get his shot on goal. Oldham continued to look a threat when a ball over the top found Nathan Adams but Cork was quick out of his goal to make a well-timed tackle.
The breakthrough came on the 29th minute mark after a melee in the Oldham box. Molloy swung a boot at the ball to put the home side in front. The chance came after Danny Lomax had a superb long range effort cannon of the post.
Investec Man of the Match Alex Davies was influential down the right hand side, his cross found the head of Molloy but Elford made a superb save to prevent Widnes doubling their lead just after half time. During the second half the Widnes manager Steve Hill looked to freshen things up, James Thomas, James Corner and Matty Lennon all came on for Lee Hughes, Graham Molloy and Joel Douglas. Thomas made an immediate impact and gave the Oldham right back a torrid time. The away side couldn’t cope with the pace of the Widnes wingers throughout the game.
Oldham’s inability to score was giving manager Tony Mills a headache, as his team struggled to get back into the game. Robert Cork seen red for a last ditch challenge on Lee Knowles as he was through on goal, the Widnes keeper came rushing out of his goal but could only clatter the Oldham striker. Ronnie McCarthy would play the rest of the game in goal. The game looked fairly safe before the sending, a nervous crowd were put out of their misery as the home side sealed the win. “It is a major worry. When the ban actually kicks in we need to get a new keeper on board because that is one area we are definitely light at the moment. So we are looking for another keeper, for someone to come in and fill the void while Robert Cork is suspended.” Hill said.
It was a piece a brilliance from one substitute James Thomas who turned the Oldham right back inside out before crossing for another substitute James Corner to score his first ever goal for Widnes. Thomas’ cross was inch perfect and it was simple header into the back of the net for Corner. Two inspiring subs by Hill combined to finish off Oldham and claim Widnes’ first win of the season. Manager Steve Hill was impressed with the impressive win and performance of his side today and said “Made up with the result. The lads are happy, it is good to get three points on the board. I thought we had some very good opportunities, with some luck as we had our goalkeeper sent off when we did, with the score only being 1-0.”
“They were dangerous they created some good chances. Overall I think we deserved the win. The last five minutes was panic stations trying to protect that one goal lead but we were lucky enough to attack and pinch a second goal to kill the game off.” Hill said.
Despite the positive performance by his team Hill was delighted with the clean sheet his side kept despite losing keeper Robert Cork, he said “I was delighted with the clean sheet, I said to Mick at the
