Widnes take on Winsford United tonight at the DCBL Stadium in a Emirates FA Cup extra preliminary round replay, kick-off 7:45pm.

The Whites will be looking to secure safe progression through to the preliminary round at the second attempt after a 1-1 draw in the initial tie at the Barton Stadium on Saturday.

"We find ourselves here a little earlier than anticipated after a very lacklustre performance at the weekend, something we're aiming to put right this evening.

"After a good, hard pre-season, you always look forward to your first competitive game, albeit a FA Cup tie. You want to get out there and get off to a positive start.

"Unfortunately, Saturday didn't quite go that way and we only have ourselves to blame for that. Yes, you could say that the pitch at the weekend wasn't the best and use it as an excuse, but there were two teams out there on Saturday.

"A poor pitch doesn't cause your hard work and desire to not be there. We pride ourselves on those two components and they always come first before anything else. That's our foundation and apart from the first 15-20 minutes, we lacked them in abundance.

"We started OK and scored our goal, but after that we stopped doing everything that worked well for us during that spell and it allowed Winsford into the game, credit to them.

"We ended up in the type of game that Winsford wanted us to be in, bitty and scrappy. That took us away from how we wanted to and should've played the game.

"We dropped our levels which isn't acceptable against anyone, no matter the level. Psychologically, we have to be better and work our way through these situations which we've been really good at in the past.

"We've always been together as one and that at times has gotten us through games. It was crying out for more than that on Saturday.

"We lacked everything we've shown at the back end of last season and during this pre-season. It was far from everything we've shown these last few weeks of pre-season against superior opposition.

"Luckily, we get a second bite at the cherry tonight at home to progress in a competition we want to have a run in. Everything has to improve tonight in more familiar surroundings at a place where we haven't lost a competitive fixture since New Year's Day... I'm positive it will!"

"I hope you make lots of noise this evening, welcome the new signings and you enjoy seeing them and the old guard in action this season."

Enjoy the game,
Burkey.
