Widnes Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of former Sheffield United defender Jake Phillips.
The 23-year-old will add versatility to Widnes' defensive options and becomes Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey's fifth signing of the summer.
Jake ended the season at Northern Premier League Premier Division side Bamber Bridge having signed from Nantwich Town in March.
He began his career at Tranmere Rovers, but after narrowly missing out on a professional contract, Jake joined Llandudno, where he was part of their 2015 Huws Gray Alliance title-winning side.
Phillips then earned himself an opportunity at Sheffield United, then of League One, where he was a regular for the Blades' Under-21 side before cancelling his contract by mutual consent.
A stint followed at Fleetwood Town before he signed for Brackley Town whom he helped avoid relegation from the National League North.
He spent the 2016 pre-season on trial at Nottingham Forest but was not offered a deal, eventually moving to Margate, and then on to Welling United in the National League South that season.
In pre-season of the 2017-18 campaign, he trained with various teams from National League to the Welsh Premier after which he re-signed for Llandudno. The defender then joined the Nantwich for an initial spell half-way through the season before signing for Matlock Town.
Jake re-joined the Dabbers in October last year before making a handful of appearances for Brig to end the campaign.
Co-manager Kev Towey was naturally pleased to secure the defender's services and said: "Jake will bring real quality to the side.
"He can play in a number of positions and enhances our options defensively.
"Since leaving Sheffield United, Jake has played at National League and Evo-Stik Premier Division level so not only are we still getting a talented player who's still only 23, but a player with experience at a higher level."
