Co-boss on injuries to Jake Phillips and Mike Burke

Kev Towey says new signing Jake Phillips will be ruled out for the 'foreseeable future' and could need an operation.

Former Sheffield United defender Phillips joined Widnes in July and was one of eight players brought to the club by Towey and co-manager Steve Akrigg during the summer.

Widnes head to Marske United on Saturday but Towey has injury concerns over both Phillips and Mike Burke.

"Jake is going to be unavailable for the foreseeable future. He had an ongoing issue that he tried to play through but we believe he now needs an operation.

"Mike Burke is struggling with a calf issue that will keep him out for the next week or two."

Fellow defender and summer signing Sam Heathcote has yet to feature both in pre-season and competitive action due to an ongoing injury problem, with the former Altrincham man not expected to be available until October.

But Towey admitted, however, that holidays will not affect his or Akrigg's in-season plans.

He said: "We did ask the existing lads, prior to finishing, that they were clever with their holidays. Most have taken theirs through pre-season and none are missing."
