Co-boss issues warning to his squad after winless run

Kev Towey has warned his Widnes squad that underperforming players will be moved on in the coming weeks.

The Whites have lost four of their last five matches following Saturday's disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Tadcaster Albion.

Widnes, due to a fixture quirk, were schedule to immediately head back to Tadcaster this weekend but the game has been postponed due to Albion's progression in the FA Trophy.

With a week to reflect, co-manager Towey admitted he will be pondering changes to the playing staff.

"I think you're always looking to improve," he said. "Even if you were top of the league you'll be asking yourself where you can kick on.

"We have said, and I've openly said, that there's been things over the last couple of games that were not positive and things were not overly excited about.

"We can't paper over cracks. We've got to do things about it and that includes personnel which is unfortunately going to have to happen in the next week or two."

Widnes return to action against Pontefract Collieries next weekend and will be looking to move up the table after an indifferent start which has heralded just two victories from nine matches.

Despite the difficult opening, Towey believes there is no reason why the Whites should not be targeting a play-off push.

"We're definitely a squad capable of that," he added.

"It's a much younger squad than that of last year. In the games we've played nobody has blown us away or been far superior over us to where we've said we're nowhere near this level.

"This time last year there was those thoughts where we were miles away from teams and weren't getting near them. We've been in every game and it will come to fruition over the next few months and we will step it up.

"You can see it. We're so close to being as close to what we want as possible."
