Co-manager heaps praise on on-loan Blackpool youngster

Kev Towey says Widnes are excited by Finlay Sinclair-Smith after the winger netted in Monday's 1-1 draw with Droylsden.

Sinclair-Smith, 18, was snapped up by Blackpool in 2013 and made his senior debut in an EFL Trophy clash against Wigan Athletic in August 2017.

He signed a professional contract at Bloomfield Road last summer and spent the early part of the season on loan at Evo-Stik Premier side Marine, making 14 appearances and scoring two goals.

The youngster joined the Whites on an initial one-month loan deal from the Seasiders last month.

"We'd seen Fin in two training sessions prior but the weekend before he was (scheduled to) debut he was ineligible due to family reasons," Towey said.

"We were excited by what we were going to get from the training sessions. You could see bits of exactly why he's a full-time footballer and what he gives you.

"The thing with him is he's not played a lot of competitive men's football so match sharpness is still probably only running at 60%.

"If we can get him anywhere near his maximum between now and the end of the season and we're able to keep hold of him, we have a very good player on our hands."

Widnes, who secured a second successive promotion last summer, now have eight Evo-Stik West games remaining and co-manager Towey is aiming for a positive end to the season after taking a point against the Bloods.

"Droylsden are very similar to us with inconsistency throughout the season," he added. They're a very good side who had beaten us twice so we need to be offering something.

"We've got a run of games now where we have to be looking at picking up points."
