Co-boss reacts to Widnes' 2-2 draw at Mossley

Kev Towey says 10-man Widnes showed 'heart and desire' to earn a point at Mossley - but the co-boss admits that he and Steve Akrigg aren't going to 'paper over cracks'.

The Whites found themselves 2-0 down at the break, but despite the sending off of Danny Ventre, Widnes rallied to earn a point through goals from Lewis Buckley and Michael Grogan.

Mossley's Ben Halfacre missed a late penalty as Widnes held on, and Towey confessed to having mixed feelings on the result.

"Under the circumstances with the players we're missing and being 2-0 down at half-time, it's a good point," Towey said.

"We had our backs against the wall and we were looking for a reaction. We'd missed chances in the first half but you've got to give the lads credit in the second half.

"It seems to be goals galore against Mossley. I'm sure that Dave (Wild, Mossley manager) will be gutted. Obviously they've missed a penalty but I thought that we dominated the second half.

"I've said to the boys that it was very pleasing to see heart and desire in the second half, but we're not going to paper over cracks. Myself and Ste have seen things over the past few games that we're not comfortable with.

"It's a good point but we're not getting ahead of ourselves. We've got some big decisions to make over the next week or so."

Widnes travelled to Seel Park without a win, and a goal, in three successive games, and Towey believes that the come-from-behind draw will provide his players with a boost of confidence heading into Saturday's clash with Tadcaster Albion.

He said: "It was important that we stopped the rot and got something from tonight.

"It's never an easy place to come. We came here last year in the league, had a man sent off and got beat 2-1. It's massive and the fact that we're back on the goal trail is a positive.

"It's never nice not scoring goals especially when we're creating chances like we have been."

Striker Buckley's second-half strike was his first in a Widnes shirt. Towey hopes that the former Airbus UK man can now hit the ground running, but revealed that he and joint-manager Akrigg expect more from the 27-year-old hitman.

"His goal tonight is a monkey off his back," Towey said.

"I think he's been thinking about it and probably not playing with as much freedom because he felt that he needed to get off the mark.

"Hopefully that can kick him on, and I thought he kept his head up despite missing a few in the first half but we've told him that he needs to be doing more."
