After 10 days without a fixture, Widnes FC’s Hallmark Security League Premier Division campaign continues with their home opener against Ashton Athletic at the Halton Stadium.
Joey Dunn’s side will be looking to record a second consecutive victory having overcome Abbey Hey following Widnes’ opening day loss at West Didsbury & Chorlton.
Billy Webb opened the scoring in his first appearance of the season in the 3-0 victory last time out, with Chris Lomax and Tom Mitchell also finding the net as Widnes’ season got up and running in comfortable fashion following last season’s title-winning campaign in the First Division.
Visitors Ashton Athletic have had a good start to the season, winning three of their opening four games in all competitions, netting an impressive 12 goals in the process.
Joint managers Jay Foulds and Dougie Pitts have led Ashton to the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, with a 4-2 victory over Runcorn Linnets at Brocstedes Park last time out earning Athletic a home tie with Bamber Bridge.
Athletic sit level on points with Widnes heading into Saturday’s fixture, above Dunn’s side by virtue of a superior goal difference. Having lost to Bootle on the opening day of the season, Ashton bounced back with a 4-0 win at AFC Darwen 10 days ago.
The visit of Ashton marks an August Bank Holiday Weekend double-header for Widnes who travel to Winsford United on Monday.
