PREVIEW: FC Oswestry Town v Widnes

Callum Chadwick8 Oct 2016 - 19:18

A look ahead to the Reusch First Division Cup tie between FC Oswestry Town and Widnes

Widnes FC will be looking to record their fourth consecutive victory in all competitions as Joey Dunn's side travel to FC Oswestry Town in the First Round of the Reusch First Division Cup on Sunday.

Widnes have been resurgent following the appointment of Dunn last month, having won all three games under the former Burscough, Warrington Town and Runcorn Linnets manger.

Scoring 14 goals in the process, Widnes have soundly beaten Cheadle Town 4-1, Alsager Town 5-3 and Whitchurch Alport 5-2 in recent weeks.

Last time out at Alport, Chris Lomax netted a hat-trick as Widnes thrashed the high-flying Shropshire-based outfit, with Kev Pollard and Kev Towey also finding the net in the midweek win.

Widnes have struggled in this competition since successfully applying to join the North West Counties Football League in 2013. The Whites have fallen at the first hurdle each season, with defeats coming against 1874 Northwich, Barnton and Hanley Town.

FC Oswestry Town enter the competition for the first time since their admission into the league earlier this year, and Dan Stevens will be buoyed by his side's recent form.

Town have begun to settle into the league and pick up some decent results along the way. Oswestry have won three of their last five games, with narrow defeats coming against St Helens Town and City of Liverpool last time out.

Oswestry won their First Round tie in the Macron Cup, and will be looking to repeat their success in the Reusch First Division Cup. Stevens' side upset Premier Division side Irlam on penalties to progress in the former competition last Saturday.

Head to Head

The two sides have already met this season, with Widnes taking the spoils in a 3-1 victory in August.

Kev Towey netted a hat-trick for Widnes before Callum Graybrook netted a stunning last minute consolation for the hosts.

Pre-Match Talk

Speaking after Tuesday night's victory over Whitchurch Alport, Joey Dunn suggested suggested that the game might be an ideal opportunity to rotate his squad.

He said: "At the moment, we'll take each game as it comes.

"The players are champing at the bit to play so it doesn't really matter who and where we play.

"We might look at changing one or two things around to make sure squad players get an opportunity to play."

"I'm looking forward to the game which we'll be going there to win."
