A look ahead to Widnes' penultimate game of the season at AFC Blackpool

Widnes FC only need a point from Tuesday's trip to the Fylde Coast to secure promotion to the Hallmark Security League Premier Division when the Whites visit AFC Blackpool.

Saturday's crunch 2-1 win over Charnock Richard lifted Widnes to the top of the First Division with two games left to play - two points clear of their Lancashire-based rivals.

George Lomax's brace ensured that Widnes recorded a 12th consecutive league victory, meaning that maximum points from the Whites' last two games will see Joey Dunn's side promoted as Champions.

In fact, Widnes could be crowned Champions as early as Tuesday night. If Widnes win at Blackpool and Charnock drop points at City of Liverpool, Dunn's side will be crowned Champions with a game to spare.

The two sides come into the game at differing ends of the form table. Whilst Widnes top the form guide, opponents AFC Blackpool sit 20th and are without a win in their last six games.

Stuart Parker's side have only won twice since the turn of the year, but the Mechanics will be buoyed following Saturday's hard-fought goalless draw at home to high-flying Whitchurch Alport.

Most Recent Meeting

These two sides have only met on one previous occasion, with Widnes winning the reverse fixture at the Select Security Stadium 7-0 back in January.

Billy Webb scored twice for Widnes on that day, with defender Mike Burke scoring the pick of the bunch with a magnificent solo run and finish.

Joey Dunn looks ahead...

Manager Dunn wants his side to prove that they're the best by winning their final two games.

"I'm expecting the lads to perform and earn those three points," Dunn said.

"We've got two games to go and we want to win both of those games. That'll mean that we've won 14 straight games to end the season - which is one third of the campaign.

"We want to prove that we're the best. I think winning the league proves that you're the best, but we want to prove that without a shadow of a doubt.

"We'll be going there on Tuesday night to do our job like we have today and hopefully we'll be coming home with the three points."
