All you need to know as Widnes face the league leaders

Widnes are in the midst of a busy away schedule and that's set to continue tomorrow with a trip to league leaders Workington.

Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey's side recorded a 3-2 win away at Colne last time out after falling behind inside the opening minute.

In a game hampered by a lengthy first-half stoppage after an injury to the referee, Danny Shaw levelled midway through the second-half before substitute Michael Grogan added a brace.

Aidan Chippendale scored a consolation from the spot but the challenge now facing the Whites is to go again and continue their impressive away form to start the season.

Widnes have lost just once away from home thus far this term - a 3-2 defeat at Ramsbottom United on the opening day of the season. Since then, Widnes have recorded draws at Kendal Town and Marske United, and knocked Mossley out of the FA Cup at Seel Park in a Preliminary Round replay.

Added to that, the loss at Ramsbottom is the Whites' sole defeat from five league games, leaving Akrigg and Towey's side 12th in the BetVictor Northern Premier League Division One North/West with eight points.

The Whites have games in-hand on most of the teams in the division, and have played three games less than opponents Workington.

Danny Grainger's Reds have made a positive start in their bid to return to the NPL Premier Division after relegation last season.

Workington have 17 points from their opening eight games, but suffered defeat for the first time this term away at Mossley last weekend.

Grainger's men responded with a 6-1 demolition of Kendal Town in the Integro Cup in midweek, but they have only won one of their previous four league outings.

This is the first-ever meeting between two sides and is perhaps a matchup more familiar to Derwent Park, but the fixture is an indication of the rapid growth of Widnes as a football club in recent years.

While Widnes are only in their seventh season in semi-professional football, Workington are a former Football League side and were managed by Bill Shankly in the 1950s.

That same decade, the Reds they played the great Manchester United team known as the Busby Babes at home in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, attracting a record crowd of 21,000. This was just a month before eight of the United players lost their lives in the Munich air disaster.

Keenan Quansah (ankle) should be fit enough to feature for Widnes after limping out of last week's win at Colne, but the Whites have no new injury concerns for the trip to Cumbria.

Sam Heathcote and Jake Phillips are still long-term absentees.
