PREVIEW | Widnes v Trafford

PREVIEW | Widnes v Trafford

Callum Chadwick25 Apr - 20:09

All you need to know ahead of Widnes' final day showdown with Trafford, knowing one point will seal the title

Widnes entertain Trafford in their final fixture of the 2024-25 Northern Premier League West knowing that they just need a point to guarantee the title and promotion.

A draw or a win for Michael Ellison's Whites will cap a historic campaign and push the button on a title-winning celebration at the sound of the final whistle.

Easter Monday's 3-1 win at Vauxhall Motors arrested a four-game winless run and has lifted the Whites into pole position to secure promotion to the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Widnes sit three points clear of second-placed Hednesford Town heading into the final day of games with their destiny firmly in their own grasp.

The chasing Pitmen need to beat Runcorn Linnets and hope Trafford take maximum points from this contest in order to ensure that the title heads to Keys Park rather than the DCBL Stadium come 5:00pm.

While the division's final outcome is in Widnes' hands, they will be well aware of the threat Karl Marginson's visitors pose having lost the reverse fixture at Shawe View back in August.

And Trafford boast a recent victory on the road over second-placed Hednesford - the only side to take maximum points away from Keys Park in 2025.

The Opposition

Marginson's team arrive in Cheshire with a top-half finish already secured, but they could end the day as high as seventh in the table should results go their way.

Trafford are unbeaten in their previous five (two wins and three draws) and have only lost twice since the end of January.

They boast the league's leading goalscorer too. Rio Clegg has netted 20 times this season and he'll be hoping to secure the division's Golden Boot ahead of Congleton Town's Max McCarthy (19), Vauxhall Motors' Nick Rushton (18) and Kai Evans (Nantwich Town) and Veron Parny (Clitheroe) who are both on 17.

Previous Meetings

It was Clegg's only goal that sealed victory for Trafford in the reverse fixture at Shawe View back in August.

But the North have only ever won once at the DCBL Stadium in six visits - a 1-0 win in February 2019.

Widnes have won each of the last four meetings in Cheshire including a 2-0 league win last term.

Matchday Information

Saturday’s clash at the DCBL Stadium is a 3:00pm kick-off. Admission is priced at £10 adults, £7 concessions and £2 under-16s on the gate via cash or card.
