All you need to know ahead of Widnes’ clash with Pontefract Collieries

Widnes return to BetVictor Northern Premier League action tomorrow with the visit of Pontefract Collieries.

The Whites are without a league win in five games – a run stretching back to last month’s win at Colne – leading to a slide down the table which co-bosses Kev Towey and Steve Akrigg will be eager to arrest.

It has been a worrying dip in form for Widnes, who have lost four of their previous five scoring just twice with both goals coming in the 2-2 draw at Mossley earlier this month.

They were narrowly beaten at home by Tadcaster Albion last time out, with the Whites sitting 15th heading into the weekend.

Rhain Hellawell has been brought back on loan from FC United of Manchester on an initial one-month loan deal to provide another attacking option in a bid to turnaround Widnes’ struggles in front of goal.

Opponents Pontefract – beaten play-off finalists in the East division last season – arrive at the Halton Stadium in fine form having won their previous four fixtures in all competitions.

Craig Parry and Craig Rouse’s side occupy the league’s final play-off position and sit eight points behind leaders Workington with four games in-hand.

Colls will be buoyed by a 2-0 FA Trophy over Glossop North End last time out, setting up a first round qualifying tie at Runcorn Linnets.

Widnes will be without the suspended Danny Ventre but will be boosted by the availability of loan signing Hellawell, who could make his second debut for the club.

Elsewhere, skipper Sam Sheen will make his 100th appearance in a Widnes shirt if selected, while defender Sam Heathcote is edging ever closer to a return after featuring for Altrincham Reserves in the Cheshire League to gain match fitness.

Keenan Quansah and James Steele are both available again after missing the loss at home to Tadcaster with illness.
