All you need to know ahead of Widnes' home league opener against Droylsden

Widnes will go in search of a first league win of the season in their home opener against Droylsden tonight.

The Whites return to the Halton Stadium off the back of a heartbreaking loss at Ramsbottom United on Saturday with Ruben Jerome netting a last-minute winner to condemn 10-man Widnes to defeat, despite leading 2-0 at the break.

Danny Shaw's red card right on half-time gave the Rams a fighting chance of getting back into the contest despite trailing a totally dominant Widnes side who led through goals from Ben Hodkinson and Conor Ready.

Chris Willcock's men would rally and ultimately secure all three points with goals from Nic Evangelinos, Iyrwah Gooden and Jerome's late winner.

Widnes' first half performance provided plenty of optimism for the season ahead for the boys in black and white, and co-boss Steve Akrigg has urged his players to bounce back at the earliest opportunity.

Despite seeing red at Ramsbottom, Shaw is available for selection with his one-match ban set to rule him out of Saturday's FA Cup clash with Mossley, while Widnes are boosted by the return of Danny Ventre from a suspension picked up late last season.

The challenge facing the Whites is a visit from Droylsden, who recovered from a 3-1 half time to deficit to draw with pre-season promotion favourites Colne at the Butcher's Arms Ground on Saturday.

The contest pits two sides together who will both be harbouring play-off ambitions after playing out similar seasons last season in which Widnes finished 12th, and Droylsden 14th.

The Bloods are embarking on their sixth successive season at Step 4 despite only being relegated from the Conference North in 2013. In fact, it has been a little more than a decade since Droylsden were a Conference Premier side, being relegated in 2008 following a season that involved league meetings with Burton Albion, Exeter City and Oxford United.

Dave Pace's men have strengthened over the summer with the additions of former Salford City and Chester defender Steve Howson and striker Aaron Burns, who appeared against Widnes for Trafford last season before moving to Radcliffe, where he won promotion to the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
