All you need to know ahead of Widnes' trip to FC St Helens

Widnes head to FC St Helens tonight for further pre-season preparations ahead of the upcoming Northern Premier League season.

The Whites have lost of their six pre-season outings thus far, including a surprise 5-4 reverse at Ashton Town on Tuesday night.

With Kev Towey still on holiday, Steve Akrigg will once again take sole charge of the side for the clash with the Cheshire League Premier Division side, jointly-managed by former Widnes favourite Jack Graham.

Akrigg will be expecting more from his players after the Whites shipped 10 goals in their last two outings, with further friendlies at Market Drayton Town (Saturday) and Buxton (Friday 9 August) still to come before the league season gets underway at Ramsbottom United on Saturday 17 August.

It is expected that Widnes will field a strong side, with a few players still lacking match practice ahead of the new season.

FC St Helens finished third-bottom in the Premier Division last season, and will be looking for better results this term when their season gets underway at home to Altrincham Reserves on Tuesday.

Graham and co-manager Oli MacBryde have strengthened ahead of the new season, adding former Widnes pair Andy Gillespie and Billy Webb to add to their attacking options.

Admission is free for supporters at FC St Helens' Windleshaw Road ground (WA10 6TD).
