Take a look through our match preview as Widnes round off their Northern Premier League preparations with a final pre-season friendly

Widnes travel to Buxton tonight in their final pre-season friendly ahead of the new Northern Premier League season, kick-off 7:45pm.

Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey's side face a trip to face a Bucks side who harbour ambitions of promotion to the National League this season after a play-off semi-final defeat to South Shields in May.

Paul Phillips' men have strengthened for an assault on the contenders at the top of the Northern Premier League Premier Division, adding Jake Hibbs on loan from Spennymoor Town, goalkeeper Grant Shenton from Chester and defender Reece Fishwick from Prescot Cables.

Meanwhile, the Whites have picked up form after an indifferent start to pre-season with back-to-back wins at FC St Helens and Market Drayton Town.

The trip to Buxton is another opportunity for co-bosses Akrigg and Towey to tinker with their squad ahead of next Saturday's big kick-off at Ramsbottom United.

It is expected that Widnes will field a side that will strongly resemble the squad that will make the trip to Rammy next week.

Duo Sam Sheen and Jake Phillips will be pushing for further game time after a disrupted pre-season, with returning to action against Market Drayton after picking up an injury in the win at Runcorn Town last month.

Phillips' side have enjoyed a positive run of pre-season results, with their only defeat coming away at Leek Town last Saturday, with wins over Glossop North End, Northwich Victoria and Brighouse Town.
