All you need to know ahead of Widnes' trip to Ashton Town

Widnes travel to Edge Green Street for a pre-season friendly against North West Counties Division One North side Ashton Town tonight.

The match will be Widnes' fifth outing of pre-season, and the Whites will be looking to bounce back from Friday's heavy defeat at home to Warrington Town.

Tonight's friendly is the first of four successive away friendlies for Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey's men before their opening Northern Premier League Division One North/West game at Ramsbottom United on August 17.

Opponents Ashton get their second season back in the North West Counties League underway this Saturday at home to AFC Liverpool, and Dave Dempsey's men will be looking to end pre-season on a high.

Town beat Burscough last time out, and have picked up further wins over West Didsbury & Chorlton and Bangor City in recent weeks, and had positive run-outs in defeats against Atherton Collieries and City of Liverpool.

Ex-Widnes players Brad Smart and Luke Edwards could both feature for Town, while Daley Woods and Jason Carey are both familiar names in Northern Premier League and North West Counties circles.

Widnes will have fond memories of their previous visits to Edge Green Street, winning 6-0 in their last competitive visit with Tom Mitchell scoring twice.

The two sides met in a pre-season friendly last season, with Jamie Rainford scoring the winner for Widnes in a 1-0 win.
