Midfielder joins up from Warrington Rylands

Widnes Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Steven Irwin.

The 32-year-old midfielder joins from Warrington Rylands and is available for selection in Wednesday's upcoming league meeting with Clitheroe.

Irwin began his career with his boyhood club Liverpool, captaining the reserves side before leaving in 2011.

He then spent a number of seasons playing abroad, firstly for Telstar in the Netherlands before going on to join FF Jaro of Finland and Aalborg of Denmark.

Steven returned to the UK in 2017, signing for Skelmersdale United before spending the 2017-18 season with FC United of Manchester in the National League North.

A brief spell followed with Stalybridge Celtic before Irwin made 72 appearances for Marine across two spells from 2018-2022.

Steven signed for Rylands towards the end of last season, winning the Northern Premier League West Division title.

He made 20 appearances for Rylands, including the full 90 minutes in goal during a 3-3 draw against Warrington Town earlier this term.

"Ste will certainly improve our squad," manager Michael Ellison said.

"He'll train with us twice before we play again, so it's a chance to get him up to speed and integrate him within the squad.

"I'm looking forward to working with him and he'll give us another option in a key area."
