Skipper becomes first-ever player to join the Whites' 150 club

Widnes skipper Mike Burke made his 150th appearance for the club in Saturday's win over Trafford.

Burkey made history by becoming the first-ever player to reach the milestone in a Widnes shirt just weeks after he surpassed Tom Mitchell (144) for most all-time appearances for the Club.

The 35-year-old arrived from Barnton in the summer of 2016 and has since written his name into the Club's folklore, winning the North West Counties First Division title in 2017, the Macron Cup and the North West Counties Champions Cup in 2018 and two successive promotions to the Northern Premier League.

Speaking after the game, manager Dave Dempsey paid tribute to his captain.

"You get what you get with Burkey, he's top drawer," Dempsey said.

"He's a great lad and as a club captain, he's everything you could want from someone in that role. I haven't got enough praise for him, to be honest.

"When I worked with him when I was a first team coach here, you don't see the things he does away from the pitch for the football club.

"He's a real stalwart for the club. He deserves every credit he gets and hopefully the club can do something for him."
