Experienced midfielder promoted to player/coach position

Widnes midfielder Danny Ventre has been appointed first team coach following the departure of Dave Dempsey.

The 34-year-old will combine being a part of the playing squad with a coaching role, assisting joint-managers Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey.

Ventre has made 53 appearances for the Whites since joining the club from Warrington Town in the summer of 2018.

A UEFA 'A' licensed coach, Ventre is currently Under 18s head coach at EFL League One side Blackpool and replaces the outgoing Dempsey, who has been appointed manager at North West Counties Division One side Ashton Town.

Speaking to widnesfootballclub.co.uk, co-boss Towey explained the reasons behind Ventre's promotion to the first team coaching staff.

"Danny was an easy choice for Ste and myself," Towey said.

"Dave leaves the club with our blessing. He feels he has unfinished business at Ashton and we wish all the best.

"Danny will remain a key player for us and his appointment doesn't change his position within the squad.

"He's already very well respected not only by his teammates, but everyone involved within the club - there's no risk involved in my opinion.

"The fact he works in professional football day in, day out will only make the standards he sets as a player even more valuable in his new role as first team coach."
