Burkey: 'The lads gave me everything'

Post-match reaction from the interim manager after Widnes' goalless draw at Glossop North End

Interim player/manager Mike Burke praised the attitude of the squad after Widnes played out a goalless draw at Glossop North End.

Burke played the full 90 minutes of the contest in his first game in temporary charge after the resignations of Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey last week.

Injuries, illness and player departures forced the veteran defender into making six changes to the side beaten at Trafford last time out, with Sam Adetiloye and Jordan Barrow forced into unfamiliar roles in a makeshift back-four.

Speaking after the game, Burke admitted that it's been a tough week for his players but spoke of his delight at earning a point.

"All I asked of the boys this week is that they give me absolutely everything and I think they've done that and more," Burke said.

"We wanted to draw a line under the last week because we know it's not been good enough and we've had our backs against the wall today, but I couldn't have asked for any more from the lads."

"First and foremost, we wanted to concentrate on not losing the game and setting a foundation to build on and I think we've done that.

"Today's a step in the right direction. Obviously we've not scored and not taken the three points which we would have liked but based on our results of late, we've certainly made progress.

"Some of the lads have absolutely run themselves into the ground today. They've listened to what I've wanted from them in terms of shape and think we've got back some of our identity.

"We've kept the ball well and it felt a bit more like the Widnes of old so I'm really pleased with the point."

Widnes head to Prescot Cables next time out and Burke has already pointed to an improved mood and spirit emanating from the camp ahead of Tuesday's local derby.

"I'm really looking forward to Tuesday now after today," Burke added.

"Just being in the changing room now with the boys, it's a happier camp than it has been.

"We need to build on today heading into Tuesday. We'll hopefully have some bodies back to give us a boost and then it's just about applying ourselves in the right manner."

Burke also gave updates on a number of players who missed out on the matchday squad, including Kyle Sambor and River Humphreys.

"We're hoping Kyle will be over his illness ahead of Tuesday's game," Burke said.

"Matty [Makinson] was only fit enough for the bench today. He's had a bit of a chest knock that he just can't seem to shake off so I'm hoping he'll be ready to go for Tuesday.

"River's carrying a back problem that's tight and affecting him when he's running so he'll have to be assessed before Tuesday."
