Akrigg: 'We can surprise teams this season'

Co-boss buoyant ahead of opening day trip to Ramsbottom

Steve Akrigg believes that Widnes can be the surprise package in the BetVictor Northern Premier League Division One North/West this season.

The Whites' second-ever season at Step 4 gets underway tomorrow away at last season's beaten play-off semi-finalists Ramsbottom United.

Widnes did take all three points from the corresponding fixture last season, with Ben Hodkinson netting a late winner to dent Chris Willcock's side's hopes for automatic promotion.

And despite mixed results in pre-season, Akrigg insists Widnes will travel to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium in a positive mood.

"It's a tough start against a side who I expect to do well this season," Akrigg said.

'They've got a strong squad that they've mostly kept together and strengthened in a similar way that we have.

"I have no qualms about what we have as a side. Is it better than what they've got? We'll see on Saturday but I definitely think that we can go there and have a proper go."

After establishing themselves in the Northern Premier League with a 12th placed finish last season, Akrigg and co-manager Kev Towey are targeting a push towards the play-offs this term.

The Whites are certainly an unfancied proposition ahead of Saturday's kick-off, but Akrigg is optimistic that his side can do well this season.

He said: "We're definitely capable of going there and coming away with a win. I suspect that a lot of people will be expecting us to go there and lose because of our results in pre-season.

"But I honestly believe that we can be a surprise package if we get everything right.

"If everything comes together and clicks, I can see us doing well."
