Co-boss reflects on Whites' win over Droylsden

Steve Akrigg was a happy man after seeing his Widnes side record their first win of the season with victory over Droylsden on Wednesday night.

The Whites ran out 3-1 winners as Ben Hodkinson scored twice with Josh Klein-Davies netting a late third after Phillip Clarke had halved the advantage 13 minutes from time.

And the Widnes co-boss to see his team’s fine performance rewarded with the three points against the Bloods, having come away with nothing last time out away at Ramsbottom United, despite a similarly impressive showing from the Whites in that game.

"I'm delighted that the lads have come away with three points because they fully deserved it," Akrigg said.

"The first half reached the same levels as the first period on Saturday. We could have been three or four up to be honest.

"I've got to give the lads a ton of credit. Droylsden came out a bit more in the second half and apart from a little spell in the final 20 minutes where they scored, they didn't really hurt us because our shape was so good.

"They probably had more possession than us but they didn't cause us too many problems and I don't think they opened us up once. Yes they scored, but that came from a set-piece.

"On Saturday, I was impressed with the performance despite the result. I just felt that we were a bit naive defensively but tonight was much better on that front."

Widnes have scored five goals in their opening two games and co-boss Akrigg is excited about the Whites' offensive firepower moving forward but insists there is still more to come from his side.

He said: "You can see how quickly we break going forward. We have more than a few players capable of stretching teams.

"We look very dangerous with the likes of (James) Steelie, Ben, Harry (Brazel) when he plays, Conor (Ready) and Lew (Buckley) as well as Josh off the bench tonight.

"At some point it's going to click and when it does a team is going to be on the end of a hiding but we've got to keep ourselves grounded. It's only three points and we're not getting too ahead of ourselves."
