Co-boss optimistic as Widnes host Mossley in Emirates FA Cup action

Widnes joint-manager Steve Akrigg says his side are confident heading into their Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round tie at home to Mossley.

The Whites welcome their BetVictor Northern Premier League Division One North/West rivals to the Halton Stadium as they look to bag nearly £3,000 in prize money and progress to the next round of the prestigious competition.

After a midweek win over Droylsden, Akrigg is buoyant heading into the cup-tie but admits he is under that Widnes are facing a good team in the Lilywhites.

"We can take confidence from two decent performances to start the season," Akrigg said.

"Mossley are a good side. They're usually big and strong so it'll be a very tough game. They beat Runcorn Linnets in midweek which gives a good indication of where they're at.

"But we're confident. Aside from Danny Shaw, we're pretty much at full-strength and the win over Droylsden gives us a good platform to build on. I'm sure we can cause them problems."

Widnes are one of two sides in this round yet to win an FA Cup match, progressing to this stage of the competition by virtue of league status rather than cup exploits.

Co-boss Akrigg is eagerly anticipating the challenge ahead and hopes his side can make history and progress into the first qualifying round.

He said: "This is the furthest we've ever got in the competition without kicking a ball, so a win would be nice to get under our belts.

"I've been involved during the past two seasons now where we've been beaten in the extra preliminary round so hopefully we can put those defeats to bed with a win on Saturday."
