Kev Towey talks Widnes' return to the Halton Stadium and Rhain Hellawell's future

Kev Towey admitted this week he remains in the dark about Widnes’ return to the Halton Stadium.

The artificial surface failed its annual FIFA test in July ahead of Widnes’ maiden campaign in the Evo-Stik West with the club agreeing a temporary ground-share with Barnton.

The Whites were originally scheduled to return home following the conclusion of the rugby Super League season in the autumn due to their current agreement with Widnes Vikings, who also share the Stadium.

After being drawn against City of Liverpool in the Liverpool Senior Cup back in November, the club announced the fixture would be the first game back at their traditional stadium.

Four days before the clash was due to take place in December, however, proceedings were switched to Barnton’s Offside Trust Stadium as well as the Boxing Day clash with Runcorn Linnets.

“Our hands are tied,” Towey said this week. “It’s certainly out of our hands and everything we’re saying is all we’re being told.

“With it being council-owned and things there’s been a two week shut-down due to the Christmas period so I’ll know a little bit more next week. Fingers crossed it’ll be sometime in January.”

Towey also confirmed Matty Waters has returned to Chester following the completion of his one-month loan spell but the club are interested in continuing team-mate Rhain Hellawell’s deal when he returns from absence.

“We’re hoping to extend Rhain’s stay but the problem is that he’s picked up an injury,” Towey added.

“Chester want to see through what he’s done so he’s awaiting a scan. They’ve said until he’s had the scan and we know where he’s at there’s no point in us taking him.

“As soon as he comes back to full fitness we’ve got the option of taking him again.”
