Joint boss reacts to Widnes' 4-1 win at City of Liverpool

Joint manager Kev Towey was pleased to see his Widnes exorcise some demons with a comfortable 4-1 thrashing of City of Liverpool on Saturday.

Skipper Kev Pollard give Widnes the lead with a powerful drive from 30 yards before Towey made it two from the spot deep into first half stoppage time.

Ben Hodkinson added a third minutes after the restart, with Chris Lomax scoring the pick of the goals with a sublime looping effort 15 minutes from time before Joe Camozzi netted a late consolation for the hosts.

"Today was always going to be difficult but I thought that we managed the conditions and the game very well," Towey said.

"Richie Mottram has made an outstanding save at 0-0 and from there, Kev has hit a great effort to get us in front.

"Once we took the lead, I think that we were quite comfortable.

"To come here and win in that manner is nice for two reasons. The first is obviously three points and the second is that it buries the demons from when they dumped us out of the First Division Cup here last season.

"It's not an easy place to come but credit to Simon Burton, his staff and their supporters. They were all very graceful and complementary of us which we fully respect."

Towey also singled out the performances of Jack Graham and goalscorer Lomax in the victory, with the Widnes co-manager quick to emphasise the duo's contributions on and off the pitch.

He said: "Chris Lomax has been fantastic lately and the last two games have showed that he's becoming a more rounded player.

"I'm really pleased that he managed to get himself on the scoresheet too.

"Jack Graham had to deputise at right-back again and he showed why he's an integral part of our dressing room.

"The leadership skills he shows when asked to do a job are of a very high standard."

Widnes now face a Hallmark Security League double-header with a trip to Maine Road on Saturday before hosting Runcorn Linnets on Monday night in a Halton Derby.

Looking ahead to next week's games, Towey insists that his squad are fully capable of handling the back-to-back fixtures.

He said: "We're nursing one or two injuries with Jay Roberts and Stuart Cook but both should be back to full fitness this week.

"We now face two games in three days so there'll be rotation as we have done numerous times this season.

"I'm confident that we're not weakened when we make these changes."
