Co-boss reacts to Widnes' final day win over Kendal Town

Kev Towey admits that he was disappointed with Widnes' 3-1 win over Kendal Town on the final day of the Evo-Stik League West Division season.

Conor Ready netted a double while Chris Lomax added a late third as Widnes ended the season with a third successive win, dispatching the Mintcakes who had Ryan Moore on the scoresheet.

Despite ending the season on a high, Towey expected more from his side after enjoying an impressive Easter weekend last time out.

"It was a typical end of season game," Towey admitted.

"We thought we were going to get a decent spectacle with the lads coming on a high after the wins over Runcorn Linnets and Colne last week, but it didn't pan out like that.

"The weather was poor, our application was poor and that made a difficult outing really.

"We definitely wanted the three points to take us over the 50-point mark and I know that we made a few changes to rotate things, but we make those changes because we think that lads will fit in and do their jobs, but we didn't apply ourselves well."

Widnes ended their debut Evo-Stik League season in 12th place, consolidating their position after promotion from the North West Counties Premier Division last season.

Towey admitted that he is unhappy about how the season has panned out, but believes that he and co-manager Steve Akrigg will benefit from the steep learning curve, and the duo are already planning their summer recruitment drive.

He said, "I'm disappointed with how we've performed over the course of the season.

"But Ste and I have learned a lot. There's things that we've picked up on that will stand us in good stead moving forward but I think for many reasons over the season, we've not been able to reach the consistent heights that we believe we should have reached.

"We've got quite a long list of players and we'll be starting to make a move on those targets now that the season's over.

"We've got to bring proven players at this level. The additions have to be well-versed in this league and we're looking at four or five to add to what we already have."

Loan duo Finlay Sinclair-Smith and Niall Watson are set to return to their parent clubs following the season's conclusion, and Towey paid tribute to the youngsters' contributions over the course of the season.

"Both lads have been great," Towey said.

"Although they've been loan lads, they've really been part of the squad. They've bought in and the rest of the lads have took very well to them.

"They've worked hard and their attitudes have been great, so I can't fault either of them."
