Co-boss offers his reaction to Widnes' derby day win over Prescot Cables

Joint-manager Kev Towey believes that patience was key as Dale Korie-Butler struck twice in two second-half minutes as Widnes edged Prescot Cables 2-1 at The Offside Trust Stadium.

Chris Almond had given Cables a 20th minute lead, dispatching the rebound after his penalty was saved by Owen Wheeler, but Korie-Butler notched twice to seal a second successive Widnes win.

Speaking within minutes of the final whistle, Towey said: "It's nice to get the three points because again, we've played one of the best sides in the league, hung in there and waited for our chances.

"We took them when they came along and seen the game out really well.

"It was always going to be difficult. There was going to be times on this surface when we had to roll our sleeves up, which is what we said to the boys before the game.

"Dale's got two chances - regardless of how they've come along - and snatched them both.

"It was an evenly-matched game between two footballing sides on a pitch that wasn't conducive to what either side do. It was a case of mixing the game up, not just from our point-of-view but Prescot's as well."

With Widnes in the midst of a run of five games against the top-eight in six games, Towey praised his players for picking up six points from a possible six thus far.

"The Chasetown game was probably the lowest-point of our managerial career so far," Towey admitted.

"Myself and Ste (Akrigg) asked for a raise in performance-levels at Atherton last week and the lads delivered. They've more than matched that today.

"It was five games from the next six against the top-eight, excluding Kendal right the way through to Runcorn Linnets on Boxing Day. It's a tough run of fixtures, but we've got six points already so we'll keep chipping away and hopefully pick up a few more."
