Newly appointed joint manager reflects on his side's 2-2 draw at Northwich Victoria

Widnes joint manager Kevin Towey praised his side's desire and work-rate after seeing them earn a late point at Northwich Victoria this afternoon.

Andy Gillespie's 95th minute equaliser earned Towey and Steve Akrigg a point in their first game as joint managers, recovering from a 2-1 deficit in the process after strikes from Brian Matthews and Jake Pollard cancelled out Billy Webb's opener.

And, while disappointed that his side failed to take their chances and put the themselves out of sight, Towey was pleased with his players' determination to take something out of the game.

"It could have, and probably should have been more from our point-of-view," Towey said.

"We created a lot of good chances and the forwards are disappointed with themselves.

"If we'd have gone and got that second goal, we probably would have come away with all three points but we've conceded an equaliser and then the lad has gone and put a cross into the top corner.

"But the lads could have rolled over at that point but they fought back, which is a positive.

"We felt that we had done enough to win the game today but we could have been a bit more clinical in front of goal and lady luck wasn't on our side at times.

"We have a good base to build upon now. The shape was good, the lads worked hard and they're gutted about the result, which shows that they care about what we're trying to do."

Towey felt that the poor weather conditions at Townfield were a leveller on the day, as the heavy rain meant that the playing surface was a difficult one to play on.

He said: "This pitch has always been the same. I played here over 10 years ago and it's never changed. It gets boggy once you get to this time of year.

"Conditions like that doesn't suit our style of play. We like to get the ball down and play but I still think we tried to play that way, and we were successful in doing so."

Widnes will make the same trip on Wednesday night as Towey and Akrigg's side take on Northwich's landlords Barnton.

Towey has asked his side to prepare properly for Wednesday's game, but still expects to rotate his squad going forward.

"We've asked the lads to do their own thing on Monday night, whether that be a swimming session or stretching session to get the lactic acid out of their legs," he said.

"We've got a large squad so it'll change again on Wednesday. It's all about giving lads game time.

"Chad Whyte's played for nearly 60 minutes today, which he hasn't done for a couple of weeks. There's a few players in that same boat so we need to get them all up to speed going forward."
