Co-boss reflects on Widnes' 2-0 win at neighbours Runcorn Linnets

Kev Towey heaped praise on his Widnes players after goals from Finlay Sinclair-Smith and Conor Ready lifted the Whites to a 2-0 win over neighbours Runcorn Linnets.

Widnes were backed by a decent following at the Millbank Linnets Stadium as Towey and Steve Akrigg's side maintained their 100% record away from home against their local rivals.

And Towey was eager to applaud his team for securing a memorable win on Bank Holiday Monday.

"I'm absolutely delighted," Towey said.

"It was very similar to Saturday's win over Colne where we've faced a very good side on the brink of the play-offs but what we've done is made it really difficult for them.

"I just wished we could've started the season in August rather than April! Fair play to our lads - we've been in transition with a different groups of players but it's nice to finish the season on a high as they could've easily put their flip-flops on last week."

With one game remaining in Widnes' debut Evo-Stik League West Division campaign, Towey admits that the season has been a learning curve but one his side can hopefully build upon.

He said, "You only have to look through the side. The likes of Jay Roberts, Ben Hodkinson, Harry Brazel, George Webster and Owen Wheeler to name a few are playing at this level for the first time.

"We've had some really good result against really good sides this season and we have to find that consistency moving forward. If we'd have added 10 goals to the 'for' column and taken 10 goals away from the 'against' column, I think we'd have been in and around the play-offs.

"They're the fine-margins. There's been games this season where we've just not had enough but next year we're looking to improve and kick on."

Towey also singled out goalkeeper Richie Mottram for praise. The ex-Linnets shot-stopper, who was selected for only the second time since December at the Millbank, produced a number of saves to record a clean sheet.

"Fair play to Richie. You know what you're going to get from him," Towey said.

"He'll admit that he's nowhere near match fit but you watch him today coming for things and I've been watching him do that for nearly 30 years. He's as good as there is around."
