Widnes captain Kevin Pollard reflects on Widnes' 2-0 win over Runcorn Linnets

Club Captain Kevin Pollard spoke of his pride after Widnes extended their unbeaten run in the Hallmark Security League Premier Division to 13 games with a 2-0 Halton Derby win over Runcorn Linnets.

Joint bosses Kev Towey and Steve Akrigg both netted first half goals to secure the three points to take back over the Mersey Gateway, closing the gap between Widnes and Linnets at the top of the Premier Division to seven points.

Reflecting on the victory, skipper Pollard declared himself delighted with Widnes' current run of form.

"I'm absolutely made up," Pollard said.

"I told the lads in the changing rooms after the game about how proud I am of every single one of them - they put everything on the line today.

"I think it was difficult after losing in midweek for the first time in a while. It was important that we bounced back at the earliest opportunity.

"I think that we bounced back perfectly today. We managed the conditions well and played to our strengths. It really was a perfect performance."

Pollard heaped praise on joint managers Towey and Akrigg, lauding both for leading by example.

He said: "I think that they have to justify putting themselves in the team but I felt that they did - they were both brilliant.

"They led by example. It's a tough place to come and becoming the first side to take points off Linnets here is brilliant."

With a tough trip to City of Liverpool to come, Pollard is eager for his side to maintain their momentum moving forward.

He said: "We got into a bit of rivalry with them last season. It's a tough place to go.

"We didn't have a great result when we played Bootle there, but we have momentum on our side so we have to keep rolling on."
