Co-boss reacts to win in North Wales

Widnes joint manager Kev Towey was delighted as his team recorded a second successive victory with a hard-fought 4-2 win at Colwyn Bay.

The Whites recovered from a 2-1 deficit to take a deserved three points at Llanelian Road after Chris Lomax fired Widnes into a sixth-minute lead.

Towey led by example by netting a double, netting either side of the half-time interval and George Webster's sweeping finish early in the second half that gave Widnes a 3-2 advantage.

"It was a very good three points. It's a difficult place to come and the lads have done really well to pick up a fantastic result," Towey said.

"We started really well on the front-foot and took an early lead but we then seemed to hit the self-destruct button and start to panic. They scored twice in quick succession and all of sudden we started to argue amongst ourselves.

"I changed it towards the end of the first half and we've had what's called a 'gentlemen's debate' on what we should and shouldn't be doing.

"But Ste (Akrigg) deserves to take a lot of the credit because his defensive mindset has got us our shape back and allowed us to be patient going forward so we could take those opportunities when they came."

Towey praised the high-quality of Widnes' goals, hoping that his side's second straight victory will be a confidence-booster moving into a tough run of fixtures.

He said: "The third goal in particular was a very good one from our point-of-view. We got the ball moving playing one-touch football and teams can't live with us when we play like that.

"The tough run of games started here today so it was important that we got something and imposed ourselves.

"What I'm really impressed with is that we're now creating chances that gives us an opportunity to take the initiative to go and win games with the defence under less pressure."

Widnes are back in action on Tuesday night with a trip to Leek Town - one of Towey's former clubs.

The Whites' co-boss is looking forward to the fixture and is anticipating another difficult test for his Widnes side.

"It's another really tough place to go," Towey admitted.

"Leek are a strong side. They're a good-footballing side that are well-versed at this level so I do expect a tough game.

"If we can go there and get anything, I think it'll be a good result but it's important no to lose to establish a run of league games where we chip away at points and build a bit of form."
