All you need to know ahead of Monday's Hallmark Security League Premier Division fixture

Widnes FC will be looking to stretch their current winning run to four games with victory over City of Liverpool on Monday night, despite being rocked by the resignation of manager Joey Dunn on Friday.

Dunn and Assistant Manager Stuart Humphreys tendered their resignations on Thursday night, reluctantly accepted by Chairman Ian Ross. First Team Coaches James Standing and Lewis Dunwoody have also left the Club.

Defender Steve Akrigg and First Team Coach Nick Matthews have been placed in charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis, and the duo will be targeting a positive result against the Purples. A Widnes win would lift the Whites to sixth in the Hallmark Security League Premier Division and above Monday’s opponents.

Widnes have had a two-week break since their last competitive fixture, a 3-0 win over Burscough. Chad Whyte, Kev Pollard and Kev Towey were on the scoresheet in that victory.

Promoted alongside Widnes from the First Division last season, City of Liverpool picked up three wins from their opening four league games and enjoyed a run to the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, where the Purples were narrowly defeated by Nantwich Town.

Since then, Simon Burton’s men have recorded just one win in their previous four league games – a 4-2 win over Barnton having recovered from a 2-0 first half deficit. Burton’s side come into Monday’s game off the back of a 4-4 draw against Barnoldswick Town on Saturday, a result the Purps would have been disappointed with having led on two separate occasions only to be twice pegged back.

One to Watch

Forward Karl Noon has made a flying start to life in a Purple shirt following his summer move to City of Liverpool from Witton Albion, netting eight goals thus far this season.

Noon won promotion from the Northern Premier League First Division South last season with Witton via the play-offs. He also lists Prescot Cables, Marine and Bamber Bridge amongst his former clubs.

We’ve met before

These two sides met on four separate occasions last season, establishing a rivalry as both sides vied for league and cup success. Widnes came out on top away from home in the league, winning 2-1 before the spoils were shared in the return fixture at the Halton Stadium.

The two teams were paired together in the two-legged First Division Cup semi-final that the Purples won 4-0 on aggregate after a narrow 1-0 first leg win before comfortably dispatching Widnes 3-0 in the second leg. Burton’s men would go on to lift the trophy with victory over Sandbach United in the final.
