All you need to know ahead of Widnes' trip to Runcorn Linnets

Widnes head across the Mersey Gateway on Easter Monday to take on neighbours Runcorn Linnets in the penultimate game of their debut Evo-Stik League season.

The Whites produced an extraordinary comeback to defeat Colne 3-2 on Saturday, with Ben Hodkinson netting twice late on as Widnes recovered from two goals down to clinch all three points.

Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey's men will be buoyed by their first league win in four, and head to the Millbank Linnets Stadium with renewed confidence with only two games remaining this season.

Widnes do have a good record against Runcorn, winning three of their four contests between the two sides, including both games at the Millbank Linnets Stadium.

12th-placed Widnes are aiming to finish their maiden Evo-Stik West campaign as high up the table as possible, and could dent their opponents' playoff chances with three points.

Runcorn sit fifth in the division's final playoff place with two games remaining, two points ahead of sixth-placed Colne while seventh-placed Mossley and eighth-placed Prescot Cables retain an outside chance of finishing in the top-five.

Linnets' playoff destiny remains in their own hands despite dropping points at Trafford last time out, and Michael Ellison's side will be bidding for a first home triumph over Widnes in an impressive debut Evo-Stik season.

Kevin Towey said...

"When we go back to March we kind of looked at how we could finish the season and we said we would do everything we could to make sure that we could to make sure that we could see it was going in the right direction, and I do think it has been that.

"I don't like the term 'nothing to play for' because you have to finish as high up the table as you can."

Team News

Widnes have no fresh injury concerns for the trip to Runcorn.

Sam Sheen is available again after serving a two-match ban after his sending off against Atherton Collieries earlier this month, while Sean Myler is available for selection.

Richie Mottram is set to continue in goal with Owen Wheeler ruled out with a shoulder injury, while Danny Ventre will miss the rest of the season through suspension.

We've Met Before

Widnes enjoy an impressive record against neighbours Runcorn, completing the league double over Linnets last season and winning the North West Counties Champions Cup at the Millbank last July.

However, a Kurt Sherlock goal was the narrow difference between the two sides in the reverse fixture on Boxing Day as Runcorn picked up their first win over Widnes at the fourth time of asking.
