Fleetwood Town's Highbury Stadium will host the 36th instalment of the Hallmark Security League's Challenge Cup final, which kicks-off at 7.45pm on the Fylde Coast.

It will be Widnes' first cup final appearance in the club's short history, while two-time winners Burscough will be looking to pick up their first piece of silverware since the Linnets' famous triumph over Tamworth in the 2003 FA Trophy final at Villa Park.

The game is finely poised as a fascinating encounter between two sides who ended the league season with differing reasons to celebrate.

Widnes' remarkable run of 23 wins in 25 games catapulted Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey's men to the Evo-Stik League Division One West, securing back-to-back promotions on the final day of the season with victory at Ashton Athletic.

Jack Banister grabbed the crucial goal that ensured that Widnes would finish second behind Champions Runcorn Linnets, meaning that the Whites will kick-off the 2018/19 season in the eighth tier of English football.

Burscough secured their Premier Division status for next season with a run of five wins from six games to end the campaign.

Spearheaded by the goalscoring exploits of former Widnes striker Chad Whyte, the Linnets scored 21 goals in the process while conceding just eight as Dave Sutton's men recorded impressive wins away at Bootle, Winsford United and Squires Gate.

Team News

Sean Myler (knee) remains Widnes' only confirmed absentee for the final, while Stuart Cook and Jack Graham face late fitness tests after the duo suffered injuries late in the league campaign.

Cook's lingering ankle problem forced him out of the win at Maine Road two weeks ago, while Graham limped out of the win at Ashton with a knee injury.

Co-bosses Akrigg and Towey otherwise have a fully fit squad to choose from.

Route to the Final

Widnes overcame Carlisle City on penalties, AFC Darwen, Ashton Athletic and Winsford United to reach the final, beating the latter 7-2 on aggregate in the last four after a 5-0 first-leg win.

Burscough saw off First Division Champions Silsden, Squires Gate, Prestwich Heys on penalties and Northwich Victoria before beating Irlam 3-0 on aggregate in the semi-final.

Previous Meetings

Widnes won both league fixtures between the two sides earlier this season, recording a 3-0 win at home before a narrow 1-0 victory at Burscough in January.

Goals from now-Linnet Whyte, skipper Kev Pollard and co-boss Towey eased Widnes to only a third league win of the season in September, while Brad Smart netted the winner in the meeting between the two sides at Victoria Park.
