A look ahead to Widnes' trip to City of Liverpool

In-form Widnes remain on the road this week with yet another tough trip to City of Liverpool on Saturday.

Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey's men will go in search of a 13th win in 14 games after picking up 37 points from a possible 39 since the end of November.

Last time out, the joint bosses both netted within four second half minutes as Widnes claimed a superb three points at Runcorn Linnets, handing the Linnets a first home defeat in over a year.

Opponents City of Liverpool have had seven games postponed due to the weather since the turn of the year, as Simon Burton's men have struggled for consistency in the Premier Division.

Sitting seventh heading into Saturday's contest, the Purps have multiple games in hand on the teams around them, including eight in hand on opponents Widnes.

Last time out, the Purps drew 1-1 at Irlam with Jack Kelleher's second-minute opener cancelled out by a Liam Morrison strike.

Kevin Towey said...

"The games don't get easier. You think that you're going to get a gimme after a big win but you have to go to City of Liverpool.

"It wasn't easy to go to Linnets last week and it certainly won't be any easier to go to City of Liverpool. Both are big, strong sides who can play different types of football.

"Going back to last season, there's a nice rivalry there so it'll be a good game.

"I do think that if we get three points on Saturday, we have a really good run of fixtures ahead where we can hopefully look to put some more points on the board."

Team News

Stuart Cook (calf) and Jay Roberts (ankle) are both injury concerns for the trip to Bootle to face the Purps, with both missing the win at Linnets last week.

Jack Banister was only fit enough to make the bench at Linnets after suffering a bout of tonsillitis, but the winger should have available again at the TDP Solicitors Stadium.

We've Met Before...

Widnes don't have a great record against their Sefton-based rivals, losing three of five contests against Simon Burton's men.

The Purps ran out narrow 1-0 winners at the Halton Stadium in October against a managerless Widnes side rocked by the resignation of Joey Dunn just three days earlier.

Widnes battled to the end only to lose to a late Karl Noon as Akrigg and Nick Matthews fell to defeat in their first and only games as joint interim managers.
