Widnes manager Joey Dunn assesses his side's pre-season campaign and looks ahead to next week's FA Cup tie.

Manager Joey Dunn felt that Saturday's pre-season defeat away at Cefn Druids was a good workout for his side.

Widnes were beaten 4-3 by the Welsh Premier League side, despite impressing throughout the game and leading 2-0 after 22 minutes through George Lomax and Chad Whyte.

With the new season getting underway next Sunday with an FA Cup tie, Dunn is confident that his side will be more than ready for the season curtain-raiser.

"I'm not overly concerned by the result - it doesn't matter and we'll forget about the result rather quickly. But the overriding feeling is frustration," Dunn said.

"After the first 10 minutes, we weathered what they threw at us and we got our shape, composure and we looked comfortable and really potent going forward.

"We scored two, they had chances and Louie's made some good saves but they were allowed back into the game with a penalty that was never a penalty in the memory of man.

"We came out in the second half, had chances and we got ourselves in a nice comfortable position but again they were awarded a penalty for no reason whatsoever which changed the whole context of the game and spoiled it.

"From our perspective, it was a different type of game - a tactical one. We had to have a lot of composure about ourselves defensively and going forward.

"I thought we were really good. We looked potent going forward, created chances and scored some goals so overall, it's been a good workout for us."

Dunn reflected on the whole of Widnes' pre-season campaign and says that he is more than happy with the effort put forward by his players.

He said: "You don't buy into pre-season too much. If you ask people how they got on last pre-season in terms of results, they wouldn't be able to tell you because results don't matter.

"I assess where we are as individuals and then collectively as a group. I think you saw today that we have lads with real quality and technical ability which is a testament to their levels of fitness.

"We showed energy and good concentration and resilience defensively.

"On the whole, I think we've looked comfortable in games, created chances and produced some good performances so I'm more than happy and we'll be ready come next Sunday."

Widnes' season gets underway next Sunday with a history-making FA Cup tie as Dunn's side host Handsworth Parramore in the Extra Preliminary Round.

The manager recognises the enormity of the game for the Club and expects a tough game against Widnes' Yorkshire-based opponents.

He said: "The lads understand the situation. They know that the Club have never played in the FA Cup before so we know what it means in terms of prestige.

"The FA Cup seems to come earlier and earlier every year but it provides that little bit of romance for every player at every level so we want to do well and would like to go on a little run.

"We've got to make sure that we train well this week and we're keen to get through.

"I'm fortunate to know that Handsworth are no mugs.

"We played them when I was at Runcorn Linnets a few years ago and I know that they've got good financial backing behind them.

"I'm not too sure how they play as a team but the impetus of how they were moving as a Club a few years ago will give an indication that they're a decent side.

"They finished 4th in their league last season (Northern Counties East Premier League) which is an indication that they must be a good side to have achieved that over the course of a season.

"We'll give them the respect that they deserve but we'll play our game and hopefully that will carry us through."
