Kev Towey admits Widnes have fell short of expectations this season

Kev Towey has confirmed he and co-manager Steve Akrigg will assess Widnes' shortcomings in the summer after falling short of expectations this season.

Towey revealed at the beginning of the campaign that his side had aspirations of challenging for the play-offs despite being promoted to the Evo-Stik West for the first time.

Widnes are currently 13th in the division and despite being well clear of relegation, the player-boss wants to see improvements made during the close season.

"We've had conversations with the chairman over the past couple of weeks," he said.

"When we go back to March we kind of looked at how we could finish the season and we said we would do everything we could to make sure that we could to make sure that we could see it was going in the right direction.

"I do feel it has been that. It's going to be a case of when we get to the end of the season we see where it has gone wrong and highlight how we change that moving forward and identify or confirm targets player-wise."

Towey also sent a warning to his players after their hard-fought 1-1 draw with Kidsgrove at the weekend.

Conor Ready gave Widnes an early lead but Oliver Jepson struck with less than 10 minutes remaining to level for the hosts.

"We definitely need to get points on the board," Towey asserted as his side face play-off chasing Colne without a win in four league games.

"I don't like the term 'nothing to play for' because you have to finish as high up the table as you can.

"The boys have got to learn quickly because no-one does you any favours and no-one feels sorry for you. You have to dust yourself down and go again."

The Whites head to Runcorn Linnets on Easter Monday before finishing the campaign at home to Kendal Town.
