Steve Akrigg offers his post-match reaction following Saturday's 2-0 win over Barnoldswick Town

Joint boss Steve Akrigg declared himself pleased as Widnes made it six straight wins in all competitions with a 2-0 home win over Barnoldswick Town.

Second half strikes from Jay Roberts and Jack Banister secured three points for the fourth straight league game, lifting Widnes to fourth in the Hallmark Security League Premier Division.

Speaking after the game, Akrigg praised his side's response in the second half after producing a slightly below-par first half performance.

"That one was an important three points to be honest," Akrigg said.

"I spoke in the programme about coming up against tough tests where you don't play particularly well but you've still got to find a way to win, which sums up today from our point-of-view.

"I thought that we were a bit slack in the first half with our passing but in the second half, we started using the wide lads and started to play our way.

"It was important that we kept to our guns and play our way. We said at half-time that we were losing the ball and not playing quickly enough but in the second half, we were better.

"They were a good side. They set back and were hard to break down but we were patient and produced what we needed to in the end."

Akrigg and joint manager Kev Towey were enforced into a defensive change with both Sam Sheen (dead leg) and Kev Pollard unavailable.

River Humphreys came into the side, and Akrigg praised his side's strength in-depth as Widnes ensured back-to-back clean sheets in the league.

He said: "We've got a good squad of 20 players or so now. We've done well in rotating the squad and getting players minutes.

"Brad (Smart), Chris (Lomax) and River have all come into the side today and done well.

"We're still churning out the victories, which is a good thing. We've got everyone onside and it's important to keep the lads happy.

"It's hard to keep everyone happy, especially when lads are in and out of the side, but it's important that when lads come in, they do a job which they've all done over the past six games."

With Widnes having now played multiple more games than the sides around them, Akrigg is calling on his side to maintain performance levels moving forward, starting with Monday's game against Winsford United.

He said: "It's important that we use the momentum and confidence that we have moving forward.

"We've won six on the bounce in all competitions. If that's league form alone, it's 18 points and one or two eyebrows start being raised.

"Winsford haven't played over the weekend but you can look at it either way. They'll look at it and think that they've got fresher legs but we prefer to have games coming thick and fast to maintain that momentum.

"Loads of games will be called off between now and the end of January due to the weather so it's important that we have to take advantage, especially at home.

"It's important that we concentrate on Winsford and get those three points to make it seven on the bounce."
