Joint boss keen to remain focussed following 4-1 win at Charnock Richard

Joint boss Steve Akrigg is keen for his players to remain focussed moving forward despite recording an eighth consecutive win following Saturday's 4-1 triumph over high-flying Charnock Richard.

Widnes moved joint top of the table thanks to goals from Kev Pollard, Ben Hodkinson, Kev Towey and Sam Sheen against the 10-men of Charnock who had Mark Woods sent off early on, with Carl Grimshaw adding a late consolation.

Akrigg was delighted with his side's performance, four weeks after Charnock had comfortably beaten Widnes 3-0 at the Select Security Stadium in the reverse fixture.

"It was brilliant to be honest," Akrigg said.

"I know they've had a man sent off early doors but I thought that we controlled the game really well, particularly in the second half.

"We moved the space well and dropped the ball in behind when we had to. To come here and score four goals is no easy task. Not many teams will do that this season.

"They'll say that the sending off changed the game, and to a degree it does, but you have to take advantage of having an extra man, and I thought that we did that effectively.

"They've changed their system with 10-men, moving one up top so we just had to keep moving the ball, which we did really well.

"We hit the post a couple of times. We could have scored more than four.

"They had a couple of really good chances at 1-0. Richie (Mottram) has pulled off some really good saves which he deserves credit for as that changes the game if we had conceded before half-time.

"But, to win 4-1 at Charnock Richard, an eight consecutive win - I'm absolutely delighted."

With Widnes now sitting joint top and on a magnificent run of form, Akrigg is keen to ensure that his players keep their feet firmly on the ground and focus on securing a ninth straight win with victory over Congleton Town next time out.

He said: "As I said last week, if someone had said a couple of weeks ago that we'd win eight games on the bounce, you wouldn't have believed them.

"We've only gone and done it, but we have to focus on Congleton next week and look at making it nine.

"It's all about taking it one game at a time which will hopefully push us on. It will make other teams look and take notice of us. We've beaten some tough teams lately and I'm delighted with the lads for doing so.

"Congleton have picked up some good results recently and we know a couple of players well.

"We'll go there to win. We'll set up to win like we did today."
