Vikings FC got back to winning ways on Wednesday night against Atherton LR after last weeks defeat to Irlam and also having a weekend off.
In an evenly contested first half it is safe to say Atherton LR just edged it on clear cut chances, on another night they would surely have been goals. Vikings FC got lucky today and was able to capitalise on these missed chances to take a 1-0 half time lead.
Daniel Garvey opened the scoring with a great header from a dangerous set-piece 5mins before half time.
With confidence flowing throughout the team, the second half continued as the first half finished. Vikings FC being dominant throughout in terms of possession and opportunities to extend the lead further.
Chances came and went, Atherton LR looking for the equaliser eventually cost them as another trademark break away goal left David Wilson one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Wilson calmly finishing off the move past the goalkeeper in the 61st minute.
With a 2 goal cushion this gave the team a comfortable lead to defend and going in search of a first cleansheet of the season it was left to Vikings FC keeper Luke Picken to produce some fantastic saves near the end of the game.
A cleansheet and back to winning ways Vikings FC move up to 3rd in the table.
Next up is an Away game on Monday night against Oldham Boro followed by a Home game on Saturday 7th September against Holker Old Boys.
