Widnes hit back well but have to settle for point

Widnes FC were able to recover from their two defeats last week away at St Helens Town and at home to Northwich Manchester Villa with an away draw at Whitchurch Alport on Saturday. The game saw the visitors fight back from two goals down before eventually conceding a last minute equaliser.

Steve Hill made three changes to the side that were beaten at home to NMV. George McGrogan returned at right-back, replacing Michael Chojnicki while Daniel Burthem and Jamil Campbell-Joseph came in for the unavailable pair of Anthony Wynne and Paul Carney. Steven Clarke was named amongst the substitutes by Hill, leaving the midfielder in line for a debut.

Widnes fell behind in the 8th minute through a Danny Lomax own goal before Mike Blundell doubled Whitchurch's lead on the 14-minute mark, leaving the NWCFL newcomers in a comfortable position early in the game.

However, the visitors showed tremendous character to fightback and get themselves back into the game. Luke Edwards continued his prolific October with yet another goal as he found the net midway through the first-half, making it 6 goals in 6 for Edwards for the month and his 9th strike of his debut season with the club.

Second-half strikes from George McGrogan, his first for the club, and Jamil Campbell-Joseph ensured that Widnes lead 3-2 before Liam Challenor rescued a point for the Shropshire-based outfit, beating Widnes shot-stopper Ben Morrow with his effort. Challenor's goal denied Widnes their first triumph since their 6-1 thrashing of Stockport Town earlier in the month.

The draw means that Widnes stay 14th in the North West Counties Football League First Division, one point ahead of Saturday's opponents, but a point back from Chadderton and Rochdale Town who occupy 12th and 13th respectively.

Next up for Hill's side is a trip to Park Road to take on third-placed side Cheadle Town, who head into that game with an impressive home record, losing just once in 6 home outings this season. The two sides previously met in August, with Alex Davies ensuring that the spoils were shared on that day with a 1-1 draw.

Widnes: Morrow (GK), McGrogan, Mitchell (C), Cartwright, Strutz-Rivelli (Casson 45), Lomax, Davies, Burthem (Clarke 45), Campbell-Joseph, Willis (Stanley 75), Edwards.
