Widnes’ defensive frailties were exposed once again as Atherton came away from the Select Security Stadium with the three points

in what was a thrilling encounter and a good advert for non- league football. Goals from Mark Adams and a brace from Jon Stephenson cancelled out goals from Graham Molloy and Ronnie McCarthy.
The home side started brightly when James Thomas had a free kick solidly saved by the keeper. Matty Lennon headed over from the resulting corner. Thomas had another chance to grab the game’s first goal but his shot hit the side netting. The first goal of the game came after 13 minutes when Mark Adams got on the end of a drilled cross to calmly slot the ball past Rob Cork, the keeper could only get a slight hand to the cross into Adams.
Bradley Williams enjoyed success down the left hand wing, he managed to dig a cross out for Graham Molloy who headed downwards into the left hand corner to level the game up. The home side were behind for 11 minutes. Widnes had chances to take the lead in the first half but Thomas couldn’t add to his name to the score sheet, after nice footwork found space on the edge of the box but his shot was deflected for a corner.
The second half was slow to get going but just before the hour mark the spectators were treated to three goals in as many minutes. Jon Stephenson got the first of his two goals after 57 minutes, the number 9 managed to turn the defender inside out before firing the ball past Cork, his second quickly followed after he nicked possession in a dangerous area for the home side before slotting the ball home. Widnes halved the deficit immediately when Ronnie McCarthy got on the end of a corner to direct the ball into the net just before the hour mark.
Molloy had a goal ruled out for offside which looked marginal, soon after Paul Carney won the ball in midfield but his shot was well over the bar. Alex Davies pushed forward as the home side looked to get a vital equaliser but his shot trickled wide of the mark. Bradley Williams was awarded the Tax Architects Man of the Match, but it was a third straight defeat for Widnes and manager Steve Hill. “The game I thought was a decent game, it was end to end, I thought it was played in the right spirit. We just have to stop giving silly goals away, that’s our area of weakness at the moment. The lads have got to step up to the plate to be honest with you. They know it, they were a little bit down in the dressing room after the game because they do realise they need to do better.” Hill said on the result. Widnes travel to Rochdale Town in desperate need of a win to get their season back on track.
