Widnes return to winning ways with Cup victory

Widnes FC got back to winning ways on Friday night as they recorded an impressive win against Cheadle Town, in a Macron Cup second round tie played at the Hinchcliffe Homes Stadium, home of Barnton FC.

George Lomax retuned to the Widnes attack, partnering Kev Towey up front, in a strong looking Widnes XI.

On 10 Minutes Lomax found himself in acres of space but the ball seemed to stick under his foot allowing the onrushing keeper and defender to smother the chance.

Lomax then had another chance on 16 Minutes when he headed wide a decent Quinlan cross.

On 25 minutes a rare foray into the Widnes box ended with a shot from a tight angle that rattled Mottrams bar, a reminder that despite the upper hand, Cheadle were still a threat.

Widnes took a deserved lead on 32 minutes however when George Lomax hit the bar, but after a mad scramble the ball fell to him again and he made no mistake, slotting the ball into the far corner.

Widnes went in 1-0 up at half time, but such a slender lead had everything still to do in the second half.

Halftime: Widnes 1 Cheadle Town 0

Widnes came out the traps well in the second half and were rewarded on 53 minutes when the ref awarded them a dubious penalty. Nobody appealed for it, or knew what it was given for. That didn’t stop Kev Towey though from smashing it into the roof of the net for 2-0.

Cheadle then hit the bar once again themselves, before George Lomax had one chalked off for offside after Luke j Edwards had rolled him in when it seemed easier to put the ball into the unguarded net himself.

Lomax had a further chance thwarted by the impressive Smith in the Cheadle town net on 59 minutes when clean through.
Lomax however was to have the final word.

On 87 minutes, he was sent clear by the impressive Towey and coolly slotted his second of the game to wrap the game up for Widnes.

Fulltime: Widnes 3 Cheadle Town 0

A very pleasing evening all round for the Whites, a lot of credit must go to the lads who bounced back emphatically after the recent defeat at Sandbach.
