Widnes FC-Ashton Town Match Preview
Monday Night Football returns to the Select Security Stadium as Widnes FC host Ashton Town in the First Round of the Liverpool Senior Cup.
Both sides come into the game in good form. Widnes have only lost one of their last three games, losing 2-1 at Irlam in the 1st round of the Men United Cup last month. The defeat was their sole loss in the month of September, having picked up two away wins over Northwich Manchester Villa and Barnton, whilst picking up a further point at home to Whitchurch Alport.
Ashton Town have started enjoyed a fruitful start to the season. John Brownrigg’s side sit second in the First Division table, only a couple of months removed from limping to a 17th placed finish last season. Striker Daniel Griffiths has played a major part in his side’s start to the season, netting 11 goals in his opening 10 league games.
Last time out, Ashton comfortably beat Whitchurch Alport 5-1 in Shropshire, with Griffiths and John Prescott netting a brace each.
The two sides have already met this season. Widnes hosted Ashton to kick-off the season on August 8, with Town midfielder Danny Coid scoring in an NWCFL record 3 seconds to set his side on their way as they went on to win 3-2.
A win at the First Round stage would put the winners into the hat for the quarter-final draw, alongside the likes of Everton, Southport and Tranmere Rovers.
Team News
Strikers Jamil Campbell-Joseph and Tony Wynne should both return after missing out on the defeat at Irlam due to unavailability. George McGrogan was also unavailable and he should also be a part of Steve Hill’s 16-man squad.
Jordan Stanley is also available for selection after a few weeks out, providing manager Hill with a selection headache. Stanley will be a contender to play alongside captain Tom Mitchell in the heart of the Widnes defence with Braian Strutz-Rivelli and Calum Finch also vying for a start.
In-form midfielder Alex Davies will be integral to Widnes’ success. Davies has had a mightily impressive start to the season, scoring 7 goals in his last 7 appearances. He is likely to keep his place on the right wing, with Luke Edwards being retained on the left.
History
The two sides have met on 5 occasions in the league, with this encounter being the first in a cup competition. The opening day win was the first time that Ashton have beaten Widnes, with The Whites having gained the upper hand over Town on two separate occasions. The further two meetings between the two sides have been played to a draw.
Last season, Town were beaten in the first round of this competition by eventual finalists AFC Liverpool. Widnes managed to beat Prescot Cables on penalties after playing out a 3-3 draw in normal time. Hill’s side met Skelmersdale United in the quarter-final, losing 1-0 to the side that went on to lift the trophy in April.
