Duo will take charge for the first time on Saturday away at Runcorn Albion

Widnes Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of duo Jay Campbell and Caleb Jones as joint managers of the Development Squad.

Campbell was previously the assistant manager of Skelmersdale United’s Under 18s side last season and has spent the summer coaching in the United States.

Jones is a FA Level Two qualified coach who previously worked under current First Team Coach Nick Matthews and Alan Gillespie at St Helens Town. He has previously managed ROMA FC in the Liverpool County Premier Division having worked with the club’s Under 18s and Under 21s in previous seasons. Jones is currently a scout at Blackpool FC and is looking forward to joining what he describes as “one of the fastest growing semi-professional clubs in the North West.”

Nick Matthews said: “I approached Caleb about taking on the position earlier this summer but he couldn’t commit at the time before learning about Jay’s availability; the only problem was that he was away in America.

“During this time, myself and First Team Coach Paul Jones stepped in as interim managers, taking part in the Widnes Cup and remaining in the role for the first two league games.

“I am delighted that we have been able to bring in two of the most exciting young coaches in the area to our club.

“Both lads are keen to learn and coming to Widnes allows them to work alongside myself, the gaffer (Joey Dunn) and Stu Humphreys.

“It’s great news for the club and I believe that it’s the start of something good.”

Jay Campbell said: “I’d like to thank Nick and the club for giving me and Caleb the opportunity. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and hopefully getting some good results and moving up the table.”

The duo will be in the dugout for the first time on Saturday as Widnes travel to Runcorn Albion in the Warrington League Division One.
