Assistant Manager reacts to Widnes' narrow victory over Prestwich Heys

Stuart Humphreys believes that a change in mentality has lead to Widnes' improvement in form over recent weeks.

Monday's 1-0 victory over Prestwich Heys stretches Widnes' current run to five consecutive league victories, as the Whites moved above Charnock Richard into fourth in the Hallmark Security League First Division.

Kev Towey's stunning strike right on half-time proved be the difference on the night.

"The players executed our gameplan from the 1st minute to the 90th minute," Humphreys said.

"We've gathered momentum over the last three games with wins at Holker, against Cheadle and now tonight.

"To be honest, I thought that we fully deserved the victory.

"I'm just a bit disappointed that we didn't score more goals as Owen Wheeler hasn't had a save to make for 90 minutes.

"The results against Barnoldswick and City of Liverpool hurt us. Particularly in the latter, we didn't turn up.

"We've had a different mentality since those cup exits, and it should serve us well between now and the end of the season."

Widnes' recent run of form puts them in good stead for the remainder of the season. However, Humphreys downplayed the importance of the Whites' form, preferring to concentrate on the next game ahead.

He said: "We've played the form team in the division tonight who had won their last seven league games.

"We deserved the victory but we won't be paying any attention to our own run of form.

"Our focus is on the next game; tonight has gone now. We must prepare correctly for Wednesday and the lads know that."

Widnes are back in action in less than 48 hours with a trip to Bacup Borough. Humphreys believes that rotation is paramount to Widnes' success as the season winds down.

"The fixture congestion hasn't done us any favours to be honest," Humphreys said.

"We've come through to tonight unscathed. We haven't picked up any knocks.

"The lads are obviously tired after putting a tremendous shift in tonight.

"As I said earlier, I'm just disappointed that we didn't score more goals."
